Frequently Asked Questions

About the Chorus

Do new members have to audition?

Prospective members will go through an audition process (this usually begins on the second visit because prospectives can’t wait to join.) The prospective member is given sheet music and a CD recording from the current music repertoire. The CD will have several versions of the audition song — including the full chorus singing the song; the “part predominant” portion of the song (to learn tenor, lead, baritone or bass); and the “part omitted” (so you can practice against the other parts, as you learn the song). You will be given a sheet of proven learning techniques.  You will then have an opportunity for a “practice” audition and will get feedback from the section leader. During the final audition session, the song must be sung from memory.

How much commitment is involved to join the chorus?

A member is expected to attend regular rehearsals and learn the repertoire using the tools provided, pay dues and participate in retreats with world renowned vocal and performance coaches. Section leaders and buddies help members who are new to singing four-part harmony and there are many special learning events to teach you the barbershop craft. There are also many administrative and musical committees that keep the business of the chorus moving forward. If you are interested in sharing your talents, there are lots of opportunities (e.g., show, fundraising, costumes, social, event planning).

What does the chorus do in the area?

HCMC performs throughout the Baltimore/Washington metropolitan area. While Sweet Adelines competitions are a big part of HCMC’s activities (we embrace continuous improvement and learning), that is not what drives us!  We’ll sing anywhere, anytime, at the drop of a hat. We have a large and varied repertoire suitable for almost any occasion. That’s why we call ourselves a “Show Chorus.” Some favorite performances include:

  • Holiday performances at the Maryland State House in Annapolis and the Mormon Temple in Silver Spring, as well as our very own “Snackin’ with Santa: A Tradition” show.
  •  Singing at senior centers around the Baltimore area.
  • Delivering Singing Valentines and our special greetings year round.
  • Our annual shows.
  • Singing the National Anthem at Camden Yards for the Orioles and for the Washington Mystics on Breast Cancer Awareness Day.
  • Performing to entertain the participants at the Howard County Walk for Life.
  • The Baltimore Flower Mart.
  • Art Scape in Baltimore.
  • Annual Golf Tournament

The chorus is available for hire for any occasion. Depending on the venue, we can provide everything from a seasoned quartet to a small group to the whole chorus. Hire Us!  Learn more…
